The 2023 CX-50 was awarded the "Top Safety Pick +" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In addition, Mazda also offers a more rugged "Meridian Edition" trim for the turbocharged model, which adds 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, side rocker garnish, model-specific front hood graphics, and other outdoor-oriented accessories. The turbocharged engine option is reserved for Base (Turbo), Premium, and Premium Plus trims. The CX-50 in the United States is available in Base, Select, Preferred, Preferred Plus, Premium, and Premium Plus trims. Additionally, CX-50 will eventually be offered with hybrid options sourced from Toyota. The CX-50 is powered by the 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G inline-four engine offered in its standard naturally-aspirated ( PY-VPS) form, which produces 187 hp (139 kW 190 PS) and 186 lb⋅ft (252 N⋅m 26 kg⋅m) of torque, and a turbocharged ( PY-VPTS) variant that outputs 227 hp (169 kW 230 PS) (with 87 AKI octane fuel) or 256 hp (191 kW 260 PS) (with 93 AKI octane fuel) and 320 lb⋅ft (434 N⋅m 44 kg⋅m) of torque. In international markets, the CX-50 is also marketed in Colombia since December 2022 and Mexico since March 2023. It is also produced in China by Changan Mazda. The CX-50 began production at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing USA plant in Huntsville, Alabama, United States alongside the unrelated Toyota Corolla Cross on January 26, 2022, marking Mazda's return to production in the United States after 10 years when American assembly of the Mazda6 sedan ceased in 2012. It is also the first Mazda ever to feature a panoramic sunroof as an option. Ĭompared to the CX-5, Mazda designed a lower roof for the CX-50 to grant easier access to the roof racks, despite the increased ground clearance. Mazda's i-Activ all-wheel drive technology and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) are standard in the CX-50. A more rugged off-road-styled variant named the Meridian Edition is also available. Compared to the smaller CX-5, the vehicle is designed with emphasize in "active and outdoor lifestyles", by introducing squarer styling and larger body cladding. ![]() Any info helps, thanks. The CX-50 was officially revealed on November 15, 2021. if they are different, I guess ill be keeping the Speed trans in the Speed. if they are the same, I will transfer mine over with the engine, since it has new fluid in it, and i know it shifts well. Will I need to pull the engine back apart and widen the gap? Or will it be ok, as it's not an incredibly high boost application? Also, are the transmissions the same? I've been told that the protege has a weak transmission, so I thought maybe the Speed has a more heavy duty trans. I didn't do the engine rebuild, but I assume the ring gap was set to stock specs for a naturally aspirated. My biggest concern, assuming the engine will bolt up to everything correctly, is piston ring gap. Is this true? If so, I assume the swap would be pretty easy, and then I've got myself a faster car with a nicer interior, and a clean title, (my current is a rebuilt/restored title), all for relatively cheap. From what I understand, internally they are the same engine, the mazdaspeed just has a turbo on it. Anyway I'm wondering how much work it will be to take my engine and swap it over to the other one. My current protege is the base model, crank windows, boring light grey interior, no tachometer, minimal features. Just found a Mazdaspeed Protege that runs bad, I can pick it up for $300. New to the forum, I've had a stock protege for a while now, fresh rebuild on engine.
